David was born in 1891 in Hunsdon Cottage, Weston under Penyard, Herefordshire. He was the only child of Thomas and Jane Evans. David’s middle name was Ernest. They were still living in the same house in 1901. In the 1901 census David appears to have a middle name beginning with E. However, by 1911 Thomas and Jane had moved to The Gardens, Longworth in the Parish of Lugwardine. Thomas was the gardener. Thomas cannot be located in the 1911 census but he was not living at Longworth with his parents. As he joined up in Lancashire I would guess that he went north looking for employment.
David enlisted in Omskirk in Lancashire, joining the King’s Liverpool Regiment- Service numbers: 2796 & 265743, killed in action on the 25 September 1916 aged 25. He had risen to the position of Lance Corporal. Remembered on the Thiepval memorial. He was clearly involved in the battle of the Somme.
His parents had retired to Tarrington by his death. Losing their only child to the war must have been a great loss.
David was 25 years of age when he died.
