Douglas Carver 1899-1917

" A bright and promising lad"

Douglas was born in Lugwardine 26 November 1899 to James and Annie  (Pritchard) Carver.    He was Christened 21 January 1900 at St Peter's church, Lugwardine, Herefordshire.  He had two brothers, James and Frank and three sisters, Alice, Amy Emma and Loiusa Joyce.

His father had been a policeman for 25 years and the family lived at the Police House, Bartestree.  The Census puts the Police House in Lugwardine and near the Anchor public house.

At the age of 17 he joined the navy as an ordinary signalman and served on HMS Donegal, protecting merchant ships travelling to America.  Service number: J54727.  On only his second voyage he caught a fever and when the ship landed at Liverpool he was taken to hospital.  His parents travelled to the hospital but Douglas died.

His body was brought back to Lugwardine and he was buried at St Peter's churchyard, Lugwardine.

Doulas had just turned 18 when he died.
