Henry Hayes Bowers 1890 - 1915

Henry was born in Withington November 1890 to John and Ada Bowers.  Ada died in 1893 and Henry re-married Annie Louisa.  In the 1891 Census Henry was 5 months old. His father was classed as a butcher but became a labourer gardener.  Ada was born in Duck Street, Withington, Herefordshire. 


Henry was the eldest child and had three siblings.  Ada Mary born in 1892.  He had two half brothers Albert William (1895)and Richard Orman (1897).

Henry joined the Household Cavalry and Calvary of the Line  known as the Kings Dragoons Guards.  Officially he was in C Squadron of the 1st Kings Dragoons Guards, Service number 5534.

His brother was listed as living at Hagley Hall, Lugwardine.  As Henry was commemorated. on the Lugwardine memorial it may be that he too lived ay Hagley Hall. 


He was killed 2 June 1915.  His body was never found and he is commemorated on the Menin Gate Ypres. 


Henry was 24 years of age when he died. 


Regimental history background

Henry's regiment was formed in 1685 as the Queen's  Regiment of Horses and was renamed The King's Own Regiment of Horse in 1714.  The regiment attained the title 1st King's Dragoon Guards in 1751.

At the outbreak of war in August 1914 the 1st King's Dragoon Guards were satationed in Lucknow India with the Lucknow Cavalary Brigade.  The Regiment was ordered to France  and arrived in Marseilles 7 November 1914.  They formed part of the 1st Indian Cavalry Division and served on the Western Front.
