James was born in St Weonards, of Alice Mantle, formerly Gunter (Nee Rooke) of 119 Eign Road, Hereford, England and the late Thomas Gunter. Thomas became the estate carpenter at Lugg farm (?) James had three brothers: Arthur, George and baby and three sisters: Clara Ann, Elizabeth and Emily. James was husband to Emily Gunter (Nee Woolett Hughes). Emily his wife, born 1890, died in the same year 1918.
In 1901 aged 18 James was a lodger in Wales working as a colliery labourer.
In 1911 he was living with his step-father and mother at Lugg Bridge cottages. James was a tile sorter aged 28 as was his 55 year mother, Alice. His brother William was a domestic gardener.
James was a Private in the British Army, serving in the Labour Corps, Western Command Labour Centre. His service number was 594533.
He died in England- Oswestry.
James was 31 years of age when he died.
