Lewis John East 1887-1916

Display real testimonials

Lewis was born in 1887 in Woolhope to John and Mary East.  He had two sisters Amelia (b.1874) and Annie (b. 1880).  He had 3 brothers, Henry, James and Arthur.  The family moved to Lower Wilcroft, Lugwardine.  Possibly sharing a house with the Gunters.  Sister Annie married a Gunter.

In the 1901 Census he is listed as working as a clay worker at the local Tile works.

He had 3 service numbers:

4521 - 1st Herefordshires

20466 - Kings Shropshire Light Infantry

27737 - Border Regiment

There seems to be a parallel history with Ludowick Bowen.  Lewis is buried at a neighbouring cemetery at Wagon Road, Beaumont Hamel.  It is certain they would have known each other well.

Like Bowen he was sent on a futile attack at Redan Ridge.

Lewis was 29 years of age when he died.
